The 1989 Joker represented something totally different than the 2008 Joker. Maybe it was fear of urban culture (boomboxes, spray paint and graffiti in the art museum) or fear of drugs (the gas towards the end of the film) but all of those seem trite compared to the simplistic horror of today’s Joker and his backstory.
